about
(Hard Times / 1970, Mexico City)
by Russ Collins.
Written in the hallway, of my current home, with the kids bimbling and playing in the background. I love strapping on the guitar, standing, and pretending I’m on stage at Wembley, yet in reality the little one needs his bum wiped and my 8 yr old needs a drink of squash. I know my kids get enjoyment out of hearing me play. Probably because they’re young. When they’re into their teens they’ll cringe. Constantly.
I’ve always loved double A sides, which is a format that’s been lost to streaming. ‘hard times’ could be longer, could be rockier, but I know it compensates ‘Mexico city’ perfectly. This is the song that in practice with Dan & Aaron, something clicked. We knew, whilst not being Radiohead, that we could create something. It’s also an ode to my Mrs. I’d love to sail to Mexico City with her. She’d probably say “piss off, I’m not getting on a boat with you”. Plus, who the fuck sails anywhere?
Dan’s bass line transition is pure rock and roll for me. Quite ‘Entwistle’. Very proud of this song. Certainly, a single and hopefully a crowd pleaser live.
lyrics
(hard times)
And its hard times, low lights, wait and see, today......
(1970 mexico city)
Way down west where the sun is shining
Let's take our feet to our silver lining
Oh I want to sail to Mexico city with you...... mmmmm.
Sailing East on a tide of yesterdays
We both know there's nothing left to say
Oh I want to sail to Mexico city with you...... mmmmm.
I can't say more, we're offering little here
Just rest your head, just spend some time my dear
Oh I want to sail to Mexico city with you...... mmmmm.
I guess I'll draw the line, and I'll leave it there my friend,
This place and time doesn't leave us with much to lend,
Oh I want to sail to mexico city with you.... ooooh.
